Driven to Distraction – Books on ADHD

This is the best book you’ll find on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Many people who have ADD have a marked up copy of this book and say they’ve found themselves in it. To the others, it is recommended they read it before getting the diagnosis and/or decide on treatment.

The tone throughout the book is scientific yet informal, and relatively free of industry jargon. It is readable by anyone with a high school education, and is very supportive to the person who suffers without being patronizing.

Although it is written by physicians they are also sufferers of ADD and ADHD, it doesn’t push for medication management or discount alternative treatments that have been scientifically proven as effective.

This is the ideal book for sufferers and their families, for teachers and those who evaluate the learning problems of children and adults, and for all health care providers. For those who find it hard to read, another book by these authors, Answers to Distraction, is written in an easier, sound bite format. Both books are available on audiotape, often the best way for the ADDers to “read”.

I myself have found that someone must have been sitting in the closet, taking notes on me while I was growing up. At least that’s what it seemed, as I found the book to be right on the mark with me and the things that have taken place in my life in regards to ADHD.

Driven to Distraction is an excellent introduction to those who have no knowledge of ADD or ADHD, but have found out about it want to know more and everything about it. Want to get to know ADD? Start with this book. No other person or researcher has collected more data and given to ordinary people in their language than Drs. Hallowell and Ratey.

This book is the Bible for a person with ADD. Coupled with Answers to Distraction, one could consider himself well-equipped to face the world where ADD is a terrible stigma.
